The Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa said that government will ensure that Indians in Uganda have peace and are treated as equal citizens. Tayebwa made the statement on Friday, 19 August 2022 at Nsambya Railways Ground where he was the chief guest at the centenary celebrations of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Pramukh is the founder, spiritual teacher and guide of the BAPS, a major branch of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya, a Hindu denomination. The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs , Norbert Mao made this commitment while responding to the report of the Committee on Human Rights on the state of human rights and human rights violations in the country from January 2020 to date. The committee report that was adopted during a plenary sitting on Thursday, 18 August 2022 exposed violation of fundamental rights of Ugandans. Notable was a case of the raid on the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu kingdom in 2016, in which the report revealed that a joint state security operation of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces and Uganda Police Force raided and attacked the offices of the king in Kasese town on the 26 November and later the palace on 27 November 2016. SOURCE URN/ INDEPENDENT WIBSITE Police in West Nile are investigating the death of 14 people after allegedly taking “City 5”, a local potent gin produced by City 5 distillers in Ayivu division of Arua city. The death started occurring on Friday until Sunday morning while several other victims are hospitalized. According to police, seven of the deaths occurred in Mvara and Oluko suburbs in Arua city and seven others in Madi Okollo district. Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Police spokesperson confirmed the incident noting that police have made some arrests and cordoned off the manufacturing plant of the gin.
