South Africa plans to change its law so that it has the power to decide whether or not to arrest a leader wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), a deputy minister.
Obed Bapela’s remarks come amid intense speculation over whether South Africa stands by its invitation to Russia’s President Putin to visit in August.
The ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Mr Putin over the Ukraine war.
South Africa had earlier invited him to attend a summit of Brics leaders.
Russia has not said whether Mr Putin plans to attend the summit.
Meanwhile Pretoria has also granted diplomatic immunity to Russian officials attending, something that its foreign affairs department described as standard procedure.

South Africans have taken to social media platforms to pay tributes to renowned author and broadcaster Eusebius McKaiser who died on Tuesday.
His manager, Jackie Strydom said that McKaiser had suffered a suspected epileptic seizure.
McKaiser also hosted talk shows on Radio 702, the Talk at Nine Show, and he presented on Interface on SABC3.
He was outspoken about issues of racism and a strong advocate of the LGBT community.

A mass vaccination campaign against yellow fever is being planned by the Ministry of Health, under the Uganda National Expanded Programme on Immunisation (UNEPI) in Kabale, Kabarole, Lira, Gulu, Arua, and Hoima districts.
The vaccination program, according to Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the senior public relations officer for the Ministry of Health, will target people between the ages of nine months and 60 years.
Ainebyoona said in a statement that the campaign will take place from June 9 to 13, 2023.

The Police are investigating the killing of a city lawyer in Ndejje Division, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso district.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said Ronnie Mukisa, 45, was a resident of Kitiko-Birongo in Ndejje Division.
He also said he was working with IBC Advocates at Namanda Plaza in Kampala.
He said this in a statement he issued on Wednesday.

Six students of Excel Vocational Training Institute in Kalule, Luwero district have been transferred to Bombo Military hospital after suffocating while trying to retrieve their belongings from the dormitory during a Tuesday afternoon fire outbreak.
The fire started while the students were attending lessons. Upon discovering the flames, an alarm was raised, and students hurried to save their belongings.
The authorities promptly responded to the incident, with the police arriving at the institute to battle the fire. Fortunately, no deaths were reported.

Police Constable Emmanuel Otyek Ikule is on the run after shooting a businessman he suspected to be having an affair with his wife.
It is alleged that Constable Otyek suspected George Okia, a cattle dealer in Kumi to be engaging his wife and tricked him.
“On the fateful day, he left his beat and slept at the brother-in-law’s place and early in the morning, he went to trap the wife and the businessman. On reaching his home, he found no man in the house,” police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said.
He explained that having found no man in his house, Otyek planned another move to have the wife and the businessman nabbed.
According to Enanga, the police officer then went to a local market from where he asked the businessman to sell him a bull but asked that he picks the money at his home.
At least 40 containers of substandard maize flour were confiscated at the Nimule border, said the Chief Executive Officer of the South Sudan Bureau of Standards, Mary Gordon.
Addressing the media yesterday in Juba during the commemoration of World Meteorology Day, Gordon said a number of tested maize flours from Uganda were confirmed to be substandard.

Uganda teams have scooped second prize at the previously concluded
seventh Huawei ICT global finals that took place in Shenzhen China, Huawei’s headquarter from 23rd to
28th May 2023. The event’s culmination was a competition between finalists in 146 teams from 36
countries. Before the Final, more than 120,000 students from more than 2000 universities in 74 countries
and regions around the world took part in the ICT Competition.
The competition results were announced on 27th May 2023 at the closing ceremony in Shenzhen and
team Uganda took second prize in the network and cloud track out of 146 teams in each of their tracks.
