A Uganda Christian University(UCU) student has perished in an accident as he travelled with his parents to the campus to attend today's graduation ceremony. Alex Gidudu Khauka, a student of Information Technology passed on together with his father on Friday morning in Kamonkoli as they were traveling to the main campus for the graduation. Herbert Edmund Ariko declared winner of Soroti East by-election

Herbert Edmund Ariko has been elected the Soroti East Member of Parliament. Ariko who contested on the National Resistance Movement-NRM party ticket defeated his closest rival Moses Attan Okia. Ariko garnered 9,407 votes against Attan’s 8,771 votes. The Uganda Peoples’ Congress-UPC candidate, Pascal Amuriat got 115 votes. Ariko was declared the winner at 10pm by the Soroti City Returning Officer, Christine Eyuu. Last month, the Court of Appeal nullified the election of Attan after Ariko contested the results on grounds that his strongholds; Aloet and Opiyai wards were erroneously annexed to Soroti West, which he noted disfranchised more than 5,000 voters. Five suspects who were jointly charged with Members of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana have said that they were tortured to implicate the MPs on charges of murder and terrorism. The suspects revealed this on Thursday while appearing before the court presided over by Lady Justice Jane Elizabeth Alidviza. The suspects are Jackson Kanyike, John Mugerwa, Bull Wamala, Mike Sserwadda, and Jude Muwonge. In November, they were committed to face trial in the High Court on charges of murder, attempted murder, aiding and abetting terrorism arising from the wave of machete killings that marred Masaka and Lwengo districts between March and June 2021 where more than 20 people lost their lives. The Court has issued an arrest warrant against Busiro North MP Paul Nsubuga after he failed to turn up in court today for hearing of a case in which he is accused of stealing a mobile phone. Grade One Magistrate, Sienna Owomugisha issued the warrant despite Nsubuga’s lawyer presenting a medical form that indicated that the MP was on a three day bedrest as he recovers from malaria. State prosecutor Judith Nyamwizi, objected told court the MP and his legal team were playing games which should not be entertained. Nyamwiza accused the MP’s sureties of failing to attend court, yet it is their duty to inform court about the health condition or whereabouts of the MP. President Yoweri Museveni has directed Frank Tumwebaze, the Minister for Agriculture to allocate Turkish firm Beyler Group, 15 acres of land in Entebbe for the construction of a hospital. In his June 20th letter to Tumwebaze, Museveni says the Turkish Investment Group has committed to building a modern private hospital in Uganda. “They intended to promote medical tourism in Uganda. Police have arrested a man who attempted to hack a traffic officer in Mbale city at Doka traffic check point. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon. The 45-year-old man identified as Simon Muhama confronted traffic officers on duty at Sino Uganda Mbale Industrial Park check point with a panga. The reason why the Doko central cell resident was upset with the police was not explained but he was disarmed before causing any harm. The president of National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has said he stands in solidarity with the leader of People's Front for Transition(PFT), Dr. Kizza Besigye who is currently under house arrest. Besigye was Thursday, intercepted by security operatives and put under house arrest for trying to mobilise protests against high cost of living in the country.
