Court of Appeal Upholds Jail Sentences for Lwamafa, Kunsa

Court of Appeal Upholds Jail Sentences of a nine-year jail term that handed to the Former Permanent Secretary Ministry of Public Service Jimmy Lwamafa and Commissioner in charge of compensation department Stephen Kiwanuka Kunsa by anti-corruption court for defrauding 15.4 billion shillings of pensioners money. The Court of appeal justices led by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire (Remmy Kasule and Muzamiru Mutangula Kibeedi) unanimously ruled that the accused were lawfully convicted by lower court and should serve the 9-year jail term. The court also upheld the order of compensation of 3.4 billion shillings each against Lwamafa and Kunsa in addition to barring them from holding a public office for 10 years.

Joint Stock Company Global Security, a Russian company that was awarded a 10-year contract on Friday to install digital monitoring system in all motorcycles and vehicles in Uganda is facing bankruptcy litigation in Moscow, court documents in Russia reveal. The company is also facing other debt related cases filed between 2019 and 2021 in Russia, raising questions of whether the contract in Uganda is a lifeline the company needs to beat off bankruptcy litigation for its very survival, and whether government of Uganda did adequate due diligence before engaging Global Security. Prof. Anthony Kabanza Mbonye, husband to Lucy Nakyobe Mbonye, the out going State House comptroller, has died. The former director general Health Services died Sunday morning, according to statement from State House. “We regret to announce the passing of Prof. Anthony Kabanza Mbonye, husband to Lucy Nakyobe Mbonye, the out going State house comptroller,” State House tweeted on Sunday. Prof Mbonye resigned from Ministry of Health in 2018 after serving for more than 30 years. Mbonye who earned his PhD from the university of Copenhagen also taught at Makerere University School of Public Health since 1996 and at the Uganda Christian University since 2008.

NUP MPs to pay 1 million each off 200m to Build Party Headquarters

National Unity Platform (NUP) has revealed that at least Shs1 million will be slashed off from each of party MP’s Shs200 Million received from government to buy brand new cars. The party said the money will go to the party to facilitate a string of services which include the construction of party offices. While speaking to press, opposition Chief Whip, Mr John Baptist Nambeshe indicated that the NUP party lawmakers had voluntarily resolved to commit at least Shs1M to finance activities. “The members themselves so wished that as a party that is leading in Parliament and is hardly a year-old in Parliament, we need to demonstrate maturity by acquiring own property.
