The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), has banned the production and sale of City 5 gin, a locally distilled alcohol in Arua City, days after it reportedly claimed about 17 lives and left others hospitalized in West Nile. The development was confirmed on Wednesday by the State Minister for Industry, David Bahati. Bahati told Parliament that the Arua-based Luluwiri Fruit Wine factory, the producers of the adulterated gin was suspended until further notice. The Minister for Security, Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi has revealed that government has started plans to repatriate the body of former army representative Gen Elly Tumwine. Muhwezi made this revelation as lawmakers joined the rest of the country to mourn the late Gen Elly Tumwine. The country woke up to the news of the death of the former representative of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) on Thursday, 25 August 2022. Tooro Kingdom prime minister Tungakwo resigns.

Benard Tungakwo has withdrawn from his position as the prime minister (Omuhikirwa) of Tooro Kingdom. Tungakwo announced his decision in a letter dated August 20, 2022 to the King of Tooro, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru. In the letter, he indicated that he stepped down to focus on a new assignment. “This is to communicate a decision I have reached to step down from the position of Prime Minister – Tooro Kingdom effective immediately in order to enable me prepare for service in another role,” the letter partly reads. Tungakwo explained that he reached the decision to avoid conflict of interest since the new assignment is at national level in the cultural fraternity.
