For the past couple of weeks, there has been a debate regarding whether Uganda has attained middle income status or not, with the government of Uganda giving conflicting figures as compared to the World Bank! Of course, it is clear that for a country to be declared a lower middle income it must maintain a threshold of 1035 US dollars as per Capita income for three years consecutively. President Museveni directed the Ministry of Finance to release at least Shs630 billion to facilitate salary enhancements for all UPDF soldiers as well as cater for terminal benefits for several retiring generals. At least 34 general officers are set to retire from active service of the Ugandan army in the forthcoming batch of retirees. The joint security forces in Kiira, arrested four people suspected to be behind the theft of motor vehicle number plates in the Busoga region. According to police spokesperson for Kiira Region, James Mubi, the criminal gang has been targeting mainly the Indian business communities of Jinja city, Jinja district, Iganga, Namutumba and Tororo district – Busoga sub-region and Eastern corridor generally. It is alleged that after stealing number plates, the gang would ask for money to be sent via mobile money on 0771491993 and 0703932528. “We have since established that the above telephone numbers belonged to a one Hussein Kato who died sometime back,” Mubi said. The Commander in Chief of the armed forces Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni appointed a new chairperson of the Makindye based military court. Brig Gen Robert Freeman Mugabe is the new chairperson of the Makindye-based General Court Martial following his appointment by the president, replacing Gen. Andrew Gutti whose term of office expired on June 9th 2022 and is set to retire from the army this year.
