Katikkiro Mayiga urges gov’t to engage coffee farmers on value addition.

The Katikiro of Buganda, Owek Charles Peter Mayiga has asked government to continue engaging farmers and the youth on coffee value addition and better post-harvest handling. The Katikiro has been engaging farmers in Ssese County, Kalangala District in his two day visit in the islands speaking about better coffee farming practices in a drive dubbed “Emwaanyi terimba”. Kalangala, an 84 island archipelago mainly focuses on Palm Oil Growing. More than 15,000 hectares have been planted with the cash crop. At the launch of the “Emwaanyi terimba” Campaign in 2016, the residents on the Island started engaging in the planting of coffee. Currently, the Island has more than 1000 coffee farmers. The alarming new HIV infection numbers among adolescent girls and young women require dedicated leadership and prioritization of the needs of girls and women in the national response plan, the Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Hon. Amongi Betty Ongom, has said. Citing studies by UNAIDS and the Ministry of Health, Amongi noted that while the country had previously made tremendous strides against the epidemic, recent trends indicate that there are unacceptable numbers of new HIV infections among adolescent girls aged 10-19 years and young women 15-24years. “Estimates show that 98% of new HIV infections among 10-19 year old boys and girls – occur among girls. The newly approved commissioner of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, Simeo Nsubuga has assured that he will be at the forefront of championing human rights in the country. Nsubuga made the remarks shortly after appearing before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee for vetting. The Ministry of Health has confirmed the first Ebola death in Kampala. Addressing journalists on Tuesday, Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng said that the death occurred last Friday from Kiruddu National Referral hospital. “The identified case, is of a man that traveled from Mubende district, which is the current epicenter of Ebola and changed identification on presentation to the health facility,” Aceng said. The minister said that the identified case presented a history of profuse diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia and confusion. “He was sick and looking for health care services,” Aceng said. Aceng said that case was triaged and retained in the HDU section of the hospital for close monitoring where he eventually died on October 7, 2022.
