UN Food Assistance Programme hit as COVID-19 Dries up funding; Uganda.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) will have to further reduce food rations and cash assistance for more than 1.2 million refugees in Uganda due to a funding shortfall, the agency has said, calling for urgent resources to sustain aid efforts.  According to WFP, with effect from February 2021, refugees will have to make do with only 60 per cent of a full ration. The reduction follows a 30 per cent decrease in assistance last April, which coincided with the COVID-19 lockdown. “COVID-19 must not be an excuse for the world to turn its back on refugees at this terrible time”, WFP Country Director El-Khidir Daloum said on Tuesday.  “We are unable to keep up even basic food assistance and the poorest will suffer the most as we have to cut...

BENI, Congo - Assailants killed at least 17 people in a raid on a village in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday night, local authorities said, blaming fighters from an Islamist militia group. The army confirmed the attack in the Buliki area of North Kivu province, but declined to give a death toll. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan armed group active in eastern Congo since the 1990s, has killed more than 1,000 civilians since the start of 2019, according to U.N. figures, despite repeated military campaigns to destroy it. “Everything happened yesterday between 8 p.m. and midnight - the armed men carried out a raid,” local leader Kalunga Messo told Reuters by phone. “They killed our brothers without mercy.” Reprisal attacks against civilians h...

US Joins Uganda to Co-sponsor a Non-binding International Declaration Opposing Abortion

FEATURED, Health, Latest News
The United States joined Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia and Uganda on Thursday to co-sponsor a nonbinding international declaration opposing abortion, in a rebuke of the UN Human Rights Council, which has enshrined abortion access as a universal right. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar participated in the virtual signing ceremony. The Geneva Consensus Declaration aims to promote women's health, "defends the unborn and reiterates the vital importance of the family," Pompeo said at the ceremony. Access to abortion is widely restricted in the other countries to co-sponsor the declaration. "There is no international right to abortion," Pompeo said. Though the document does not directly address same-sex marriage, the only co-spon...

Ugandan police and military forces armed with door cutters, AK-47 guns, tear gas canisters and batons stormed offices of the National Unity Platform party in Kampala on Wednesday.   Roads leading to party offices were cut off as police parked huge trucks in front.  Security officers forced open doors and took items from inside. They later asked members of the party to sign for what was taken.  Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP spokesperson, said the officers took items from the office of party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, better known by his stage name Bobi Wine.   "They have taken paraphernalia, that is red berets. T-shirts. They have taken documents ... we are still trying to establish exactly," Ssenyonyi said. "They also broke into honorable Kyagulanyi's ...

By Matt Smith Pipeline deal with Tanzania and agreement with Total raise hopes of FID—but go-ahead could be delayed until 2022 Upcoming elections and doubts over financing for the world’s longest heated oil pipeline could scupper Uganda’s hopes of obtaining FID on its much-delayed Lake Albert crude project before year-end. Lake Albert was found to hold c.1.7bn bl of crude following Tullow Oil’s discovery of oil in 2006. The financially troubled Anglo-Irish Tullow, French major Total and Chinese NOC Cnooc each hold one-third stakes in the project—although Total agreed in April to buy out Tullow for $575mn: $500mn on conclusion of the deal, plus $75mn following FID. Tullow, which says the sale should be complete by year-end, would receive further payments if Brent prices ...

Is it Hydroxychloroquine or Restrictions for Uganda’s low Coronavirus Cases!

FEATURED, Health, NEWS
Hydroxychloroquine has been touted by some — including President Donald Trump — as a treatment for COVID-19. But studies have found it is not an effective treatment and may cause serious side effects for some patients, as we’ve reported. False claims about the drug nevertheless continue to circulate on social media. An article shared on Facebook from the website palmerfoundation.com.au is headlined, “Hydroxychloroquine is why Uganda, with a population of 43M, has only 15 COVID-19 deaths.” “Uganda, a country in east-central Africa, has a 2018 population of 42.729 million, which is 13% of the United States’ population of 328.239 million in 2019,” the article says. “And yet Uganda has 1,603 COVID-19 cases and just 15 deaths (h/t Rush Limbaugh), wh...

Candidates in Uganda's upcoming parliamentary elections have until Thursday to pay a nomination fee of a little more than $800 to the Electoral Commission. However, some don't have the money, forcing political parties to appeal for support on social media. Last week, Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as the singer Bobi Wine, asked his followers on social media to financially support parliamentary candidates running under his National Unity Platform party.  He said that as the nomination period draws to a close, the party has many candidates, especially from western and northern Uganda, who risk being unable to run because they don't have the required three million shillings, equal to about $800.  Wine accused President Yoweri Museveni and his allies of making it expensive...
