At least 25 civilians have been killed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) troubled east, local officials said on Friday, blaming the attack on the notorious ADF militia. The army was chasing ADF fighters on Thursday when they found the bodies of 25 civilians, who had been “taken by surprise in their fields on New Year’s Eve,” Donat Kibuana, the administrator of the Beni territory, told news reporters. The ADF, which has been active in the region since the 1990s as a Ugandan rebel group, is one of more than 100 rebel groups that plague the eastern provinces of the vast country. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) will have to further reduce food rations and cash assistance for more than 1.2 million refugees in Uganda due to a funding shortfall, the agency has said, calling for urgent resources to sustain aid efforts.  According to WFP, with effect from February 2021, refugees will have to make do with only 60 per cent of a full ration. The reduction follows a 30 per cent decrease in assistance last April, which coincided with the COVID-19 lockdown. “COVID-19 must not be an excuse for the world to turn its back on refugees at this terrible time”, WFP Country Director El-Khidir Daloum said on Tuesday.  “We are unable to keep up even basic food assistance and the poorest will suffer the most as we have to cut...

BENI, Congo - Assailants killed at least 17 people in a raid on a village in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday night, local authorities said, blaming fighters from an Islamist militia group. The army confirmed the attack in the Buliki area of North Kivu province, but declined to give a death toll. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan armed group active in eastern Congo since the 1990s, has killed more than 1,000 civilians since the start of 2019, according to U.N. figures, despite repeated military campaigns to destroy it. “Everything happened yesterday between 8 p.m. and midnight - the armed men carried out a raid,” local leader Kalunga Messo told Reuters by phone. “They killed our brothers without mercy.” Reprisal attacks against civilians h...

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is rushing support to tens of thousands of people who have been recently displaced in the aftermath of brutal attacks and fighting by the armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s North Kivu and Ituri provinces. More than 50,000 people have fled in the aftermath of a recent upsurge in fighting in North Kivu. The displaced include an overwhelming number of children – including many who are unaccompanied by either a parent or guardian.
