Uganda Land commission Beatrice Byenkya Charged with Abuse of Office

The Uganda Land Commission chairperson Beatrice Nyakaisiki Byenkya has appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kololo where she has been charged with abuse of office and obstruction of a search.

Byenkya has been jointly charged with three police officers attached to ULC for denying entry officials from the IGG’s office to conduct a lawful search in Beatrice’s office.

This follows a letter by the Inspector General of Government IGG Beti Kamya to the lands minister Judith Nabakooba, ordering the interdiction of the Chairperson of the Uganda Land Commission until investigations into her misconduct are complete.

The major aim was to pave way for the IGG to investigate on cases of corruption and abuse of office. Prosecution alleges that the police constables; Richard Godfrey Anywar, Titus Wamono and Edward Turyatunga, working on orders of Byenkya last week on 4th Jan 2022 obstructed IGG investigators to carry out a lawful search in the offices of ULC contrary to Section 35 (g) of the Inspectorate of Government Act

The case was before chief magistrate Joan Aciro. However Byenkya, the former Hoima district woman member of Parliament, denied the charges read against her.
