A Ugandan silverback gorilla called Rafiki is one of countless animals that has fallen victim to poachers as the effects of coronavirus hit the east African country. At the start of June this year wildlife rangers noticed that Rafiki had disappeared. After a search they found his body. Rafiki had been killed by a poacher who claimed the animal charged at him and the killing was an act of self-defence. The poacher was sentenced to 11 years in jail. By Our Reporter Officials from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) have revealed that there is a gorilla baby boom happening in Uganda, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak on the country’s tourism industry. One week after a man was sentenced to 11 years in jail for killing Rafiki, a beloved gorilla living in a Ugandan national park, two new baby gorillas have been discovered in the same park. The babies were born in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in July to separate groups of gorillas, and both families are comfortable in the presence of humans. The newborns are part of a "baby boom in the protected forest popular with tourists," reports The Associated Press.
