
Insecurity: UN Extends South Sudan Arms Trade Embargo To 2021 Over Crimes Against Humanity

As a result of the heinous crimes against humanity being
perpetrated against civilians by armed militia in South Sudan, the United
Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Friday adopted a resolution to extending
until May next year an arms embargo on South Sudan and a travel ban and
financial sanctions for targeted individuals.
The United States-drafted document received 12 votes
in favour, with Russia, China and South Africa abstaining from the voting.
The council additionally scheduled a midterm review of
the measures to take place by December 15 and expressed its "readiness to
consider adjusting measures ... including through modifying, suspending,
lifting or strengthening."
