
Jailed Kampala socialite, Charles Olim, also known as Sipapa has hired a set of new lawyers after the ones he previously used abandoned him.
On Monday, the new lawyers of Wameli & Co. Advocates told court presided over by Grade One Magistrate, Esther Adikini that they had been given instructions to represent the city socialite who is accused of robbery of shs1.6 billion from a South Sudanese national.
Geoffrey Turyamusiima who led the lawyers told court that he has instructions from the duo to file an application for infringement on their personal liberty.
“Our client was arrested and kept at Kireka for over three days above the stipulated 48 hours without being taken to court while his breastfeeding wife was in custody for over a week before being presented in court. We have instructions to file an application for infringement on their life in the High Court,”Turyamusiima told court.
The state prosecutor, Hope Rukundo in return asked court for an adjournment since investigations into the matter are not yet complete but Sipapa’s lawyers asked that the state should be compelled to expedite investigations since the accused have spent a long time on remand.
In response, the state prosecutor said they are still within time since the law allows a period of six months.
The trial grade one magistrate, Esther Adikini asked the state to speed up investigations but adjourned the case to November, 10, 2022.
Charges
Sipapa and his wife, Shamilah Nakiyimba face charges related to aggravated robbery contrary to section 285and 286 of the Penal Code Act.
It is alleged that Charles Olim, 33, a businessman dealing in gold, cars and music promotion, together with Nakiyimba, a designer and others still at large on the night of August ,29, 2022, at Bunga Kawuku, Makindye Division robbed a one Jacob Arok Mul and Mary Ateng of $429, 000, mobile phones, TV set, an apple MacBook and immediately before or after using a substance on their victims which rendered them unconscious.
