President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has revealed that the government of Uganda plans to construct a leather tanning factory in Luwero Industrial Park, such that Ugandans can stop exporting hides and skins cheaply yet buying expensive shoes abroad.
Museveni made this revelation on Thursday during the graduation ceremony for Victory School of Beauty, Kampala, where 720 graduands graduated in various disciplines with diplomas and certificates.
Commenting about the function Museveni tweeted that; “Yesterday, 720 students graduated at Victory School of Beauty in Natete, Kampala District. I would like to see Victory School of Beauty expand its programs to equip more youth with skills in our aim to create wealth and jobs through services, and industry.”
He noted that “We export hides and skins in their raw form and end up buying expensive shoes from Italians. The government will start a leather processing industry in Luweero District. We shall also soon embark on making sweaters that were being previously imported.”
President Museveni noted that “A lot of funds are used in importing goods that can be produced in Uganda. The government has facilitated the youth by providing them with common user facilities. Why should we buy furniture from countries that have got no forests while we have forests within?”
While acknowledging one of Uganda’s innovators in the leather tanning sexctor Museveni said that “I also commend Mr. Robert Kasibante for joining the government in its efforts to produce leather shoes locally, this effort is similar to the skilling projects, whose target is value addition to local product.”,
