The police in Nwoya district are probing the sudden death of Charles Ochakacon, the Division Prisons Commander attached to Amuru and Nwoya districts. The 54-year-old officer reportedly collapsed and died moments later on Thursday evening at Continental bar and lodge in Purongo town council, Nwoya district. Cosmas Adyebo, the manager of Continental bar and lodge in a report to the police noted that the deceased had booked a room for two days after arriving on Wednesday. He told police in a statement that the deceased had spent part of the night with a girlfriend in his room but she left him at around 1:30am Thursday morning. Members of parliament have raised concern about the continuous rise of Uganda's public debt which has increased by 22 per cent from Shs 56.938 trillion in FY 2019/20 to Shs 69.513 trillion in FY 2020/21. The MPs have asked government to develop mechanisms that will ensure the country returns to a low risk of debt distress. During plenary this week, the MPs approved two reports by the committee on national economy on the state of indebtedness, grants and guarantees and another one on the performance of the economy. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, has disclosed that Ugandans will have to pay Shs 200,000 for lost national ID replacements or make changes. Previously, the government has been charging Shs50,000. While appearing before the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee of Parliament, Otafiire said that the new fee structure will force Ugandans to be very careful with their IDs. “If you don’t want to pay the Shs200,000, then be careful with your ID,” he said. Medical workers in Lira district have gone on strike over unpaid salaries. The more than 124 personnel argue that they have gone for at least three months without pay. On Thursday morning, the health workers from different facilities abandoned work and stormed the district headquarters demanding an explanation from the district authorities. The workers failed to meet the LCV chairperson, Chief Administrative Officer, and Human Resource Officer who were not available. Police in Kween district are investigating an incident in which a man raped an underage girl and killed her before burning her body. This happened at Kortowamalil, Cherangut parish, Kwosir sub county in Kween district. The exercise is scheduled to begin this afternoon at an undisclosed location and will take 48 hours to scrutinize the votes. The exercise is expected to end on Thursday at 2 pm and a report filed in court. Each party shall be represented by two agents during the exercises and they shall at times be under the supervision of the Registrar of the Supreme Court and her staff.
