7 months after closure due to COVID-19, schools reopen with preventive measures Schools in several African countries reopened Monday after over seven months of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic. Students Forced to Postpone Uganda trip

Two Westmeath students who were due to volunteer in Uganda for three weeks this summer have said they are determined to try to make the trip next year, after Covid forced them to cancel the journey. Jane Nangle from Ringtown, a student nurse at UCD, and Katie Coleman from Raharney, who is studying teaching at DCU, were to travel in June with Nurture Africa which had arranged for them to work with partner schools and participate in community projects such as house maintenance and home visits. Ugandan Schools to Re-open, Date for UNEB Exams Set.

All indications are that a dead year will not be declared, schools will reopen later this month, and national exams usually set by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) in November and December, will go ahead, in March 2021. According to a letter recently written by the Minister of Education Janet Kataha Museveni to Finance Minister Matia Kasaija seeking the release of capitation grants to schools, the focus will be on candidate classes to resume, for what would be a second term, on September 20, this year. University Wins £500k Grant to help Combat COVID-19 in Uganda

The University of Salford’s School of Science, Engineering & Environment has been awarded more than £500,000 to address the threat of COVID-19 in Uganda. The project is funded by UK Research and Innovation through the UK Government’s Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) and the Newton Fund. East African University Proprietor Hassan Alwi and Family drown in River Nile.

The Family of East African University proprietor, Hassan Alwi, are said to have drowned in an accident on River Nile. According to a statement from Uganda Police, Hassan Alwi’s wife Super Shakirah, and one their daughters Amirror Alwi drowned when their boat experienced engine failure and sailed through spillways of River Nile.
