Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is slated to officially open the eighth edition of the Uganda Waragi Nyege Nyege on Thursday November 7, 2023 in Jinja. The festival, which is happening from 9th to 12th November is being held in partnership with the city of Jinja to maximise the opportunities that will accrue to the city, its people, and the region of Busoga. Organisers ban suits and kanzus at Nyege Nyege festival that starts on Thursday and ends on Sunday.

Organisers of this year’s Nyege Nyege festival say nobody will access any of the venues while dressed in a suit plus necktie, gomesi, or kanzus. A gomesi or busuuti is a colourful floor-length dress, which is the most commonly used costume for women in Buganda and Busoga, while a kanzu is a robe or tunic mostly worn by men from Bantu-speaking tribes. This year’s edition gets underway on Thursday, and ends on Sunday, across three venues, including the Source of the Nile, Nile Park, Jinja Golf Ground and Jinja Agricultural Showground. The Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) have kicked off this morning across the country with 749,347 candidates slated to participate in this year’s PLE. The examination schedule for PLE candidates has begun with mathematics this morning and will shift to social studies in the afternoon. Tomorrow, candidates will sit for their English and science papers. The examinations will take place in 14,442 centers, encompassing both government Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools and non-UPE schools. In an effort to guarantee the smooth conduct of the examinations, an extensive workforce of 11,758 scouts, 10,664 chief invigilators, and 30,059 invigilators has been deployed across the country to supervise and manage the examination process. MTN Uganda, the country's leading mobile phone operator, has posted a remarkable 21.1% increase in its profit after tax for the third quarter of 2023, as the company continues to thrive on the back of a growing customer base and burgeoning demand for data and fintech services. The profit after tax surged to Shs 354.4 billion for the quarter ending September 30, 2023, up from Shs 292.6 billion during the same period last year.
