Overwhelmed: E.C Postpones Nomination Dates Due To Huge Number Of Aspirants

By Keefa Nuwahereza The Uganda Electoral Commission has postponed nomination dates for various positions ahead of the 2021 elections after being overwhelmed by the big numbers of candidates vying for particular political offices. While announcing the changes in the schedules for nomination dates, the E.C on Thursday evening wrote on social media thus; “Due to high number of aspirants at nomination centres,  and in exercise of powers vested in EC (Sec 50 of EC Act) the Commission has decided to extend the nomination exercise, earlier scheduled to close 01.10.20 for 4 days, i.e from Fri 02 Oct-Mon 05.10.20 inclusive Saturday and Sun Sunday.” The E.C also revealed that it has postponed nominations for candidates vying for Local Government Council  positions. Uganda on Thursday resumed scheduled commercial passenger flights after seven months of government suspensions over the COVID-19 pandemic. Vianney Luggya, communications officer of Uganda Civil Aviation Authority, told Xinhua by telephone that the phased flight operations at Entebbe International Airport, about 40 km south of the capital Kampala, resumed after the government eased COVID-19 restrictions on aviation. He said the first passenger flight to arrive at Entebbe airport was Turkish Airlines, which landed at 3:55 a.m. and departed at 4:50 a.m. local time. "The flights have resumed today. Uganda Records 158 New COVID-19 Cases.

Uganda's Ministry of Health on Thursday reported 158 new coronavirus cases raising the national total to 8,287. Majority of the new cases (125) were reported from contacts and alerts with the capital Kampala accounting for most of them (76 or about 61 percent). The remaining 26 areas each recorded between a minimum of one case and a maximum of four cases. The other 33 new cases were all Ugandan returnees from Oman (18), Jordan (10) and Afghanistan (5). The East African country has reported at least 110 confirmed coronavirus cases for the last 18 straight days; this included a new record highest daily increase in cases.
